This is how purpose can birth a brand.

Let’s be real—every brand wants to make money. But the ones that stand out, the ones we remember, are those that exist for something deeper.

Take TOMS Shoes for example. Back in 2006, Blake Mycoskie traveled to Argentina and saw how tough life was for kids who didn’t even have shoes. That experience sparked something in him. He didn’t just come back to create another shoe company—he built a brand with a heartbeat.

For every pair sold, another pair was given to a child in need. Simple, but powerful. Imagine how that story must have hit investors philanthropist and buyers right in the heart. No wonder TOMS grew into one of the top purposeful brands in the world.

Noise vs Music in Branding 🎶

The same way we have noise and music is the same way we have noisy brands and straightforward brands. Noise is scattered, confusing, and hard to enjoy. Music, on the other hand, is structured, intentional, and hits you with clarity. The same principle applies to branding.

1. Brand Identity

A noisy brand lacks consistency in its identity. Today, their colors scream red and yellow. Tomorrow, they switch to green and purple. Next week, they redesign everything again just because a new trend popped up. This inconsistency doesn’t just confuse the audience — it weakens trust. People can’t connect with what constantly changes.

But a straightforward brand? Their identity is crystal clear. Every design, every color, every logo placement is intentional. They’re not chasing trends; they’re building a reputation. Their audience sees them and immediately knows this is the brand I trust.

2. Strategy

A noisy brand has no real strategy. They just follow whatever is hot at the moment. One month, they’re copying competitors. The next, they’re imitating influencers. There’s no originality, no backbone.

A straightforward brand, however, moves differently. They study their niche. They understand what their competitors are doing, but they don’t just copy. They outmaneuver. They build strategies that influence perception and decisions, guiding their audience towards them naturally.

Perhaps the most painful difference — noisy brands lack vision. They don’t know where they’ll be in 10 years. They don’t even know where they want to be in 2 years. Without vision, every effort is scattered.

But a straightforward brand sees the bigger picture. They have a compass that guides them. Every design, every campaign, every interaction pushes them closer to that long-term vision.

"Partnership or exploitation"

So there was this individual back in the day who posted on his page that he wanted a partnership in his business.

I immediately pitched my services how I could scale up his brand’s patronage by creating nice visuals for him. He accepted right away, and we hopped on a call.

Turns out, he ran a clothing brand, and I was going to earn a revenue share for every sale he made. I started off by designing an enticing flyer, and he said he loved it.

But then things started to get strange. He began sending me images of clothes to post on my status. Now, I’m not the type to just post anything, but I obliged — “pride won't take you anywhere,” they say.

This went on for days… until I noticed something:
He never posted his own business on his own status.

When I confronted him, he finally opened up — he was only in partnership with someone else. He didn’t even own the business. His proposal to me? “If you help me sell, you’ll get your revenue.”

Right there, I lost interest. Another wasted effort, I thought.

Looking back today, I realize I could have done better — but back then, I didn’t know much about truly growing a business.

Now?
I know how to:
